Happy New year

Our new year started with severe weather conditions. The birds were starving, as fast as i filled the feeders they emptied. This cheeky chappy actually came into the kitchen asking for more food!!
We had lambing start on New Years day, so a very early start for me, it was a straight forward delivery with no intervention. 3 days later another portland girl was in labour but not such a good outcome, she delivered her lamb dead and no amount of attempting to rescucitate helped, it was very sad.
a week later another difficult delivery, this Portland ewe's lamb was head back and leg back, we managed to turn the head ,but she had to deliver with one leg forward and one back. With a lot of pushing and pulling (and profanities from me) we got the little ewe lamb charlotte safe and well.
We still have 6 portlands to go, then the Herdwicks begin, and the 2 manx... now they are evil to lamb!!!
We have a waiting list for our herdwick meat available, which is testament to the qulaity, so we are delighted.
The bookings for the cottages are looking up, and we hhave had our inspection today which earned us a 3* plus... so we are delighted!!

Snowy January

Gosh what a lot of snow we have had. The poor sheep have been huddled in their field shelter, and are now just 4 weeks off lambing so lets hope the weather improves for them.

we have 3 fabulous little egyptian mau kittens, we are expecting lots of interest when the advert goes into press for them, they are such fun cats, all spotty and dotty!!

The horses have spent lots of time indoors and are bored as are we.. we cannot wait to get back on the road with them again and off to the local pub for a coffee and chocs midmorning.

we are hoping to get insurance to be able to offer our guests the option of booking a tour of the villages in the carriage.

Lots of hot yorkshire casseroles and home baking has been the dish of the day here in the farmhouse.. in my new kitchen. It was installed over the full month of December which is why we missed the december Blog.

Well, happy new year to you all.. from Rose cottage farm and all the creatures here!!

NOVEMBER IS HERE...

Yes the cold wind doth blow here in the north east.. we have seen lots of squirrels busy collecting their nuts for the winter months. All our ram lambs have been butchered and sold, just 5 little ewe lambs left now.

we have had another litter of Birman kittens, just two this time, such pretty kits.

The holiday season has finished now and just a couple of bookings here and there for the cottages, we are hoping for some last minute bookings this weekend from people with nrervous pets wanting to get away from the fireworks in the towns. After that its knuckle down to decorating andf repairs in the cottages and around the farm ready for the busy spring period, which seems a long way off just now.

Christmas is just around the corner and our thoughts are turning to decorations and log fires here at rose cottage. MM lots of christmas fare top eat, yummy.... lots of yorkshire recipes to follow in the next few weeks.. watch this space, and dont forget to check the web site on guestlink.co.uk for our special offers or check http://www.rose-cottage-farm.co.uk/

ALL HALLOWS EVE IS ON ITS WAY

We are looking forward to October and its fun on halloween with our grandson, lots of cauldron stirring and spooky tales to tell.

The cottages often get very busy at this time and the start of November with people with timid dogs booking in to get away from the noise of Fireworks in the Towns. We always make a special exception for these bookings, making no extra charge for these frightened pets.

Our birman girl Spellbound has given birth to 3 gorgeous kittens, and our Egyptian female kitten is growing into a superb girl, and ready for the show bench soon.

The Herdwick lambs made good weight and have been butchered, a local firm called Taste Tradition dealt with them this time and we were really pleased with the joints and the presentation. The new tup arrives today from Cumbria, so his ladies are eagerly awaiting their new suitor!!

Audrey has been gathering Rosehips for Rosehip wine, and making batches of picallily, and trays of Parkin.

The big tidy up for winter has started outside in the gardens and fields. So we are busy as usual.

JEANNIE THE NORWEGAIN FJORD PONY

It has been a very sad start to august for us, Jeannie our Norwegian fjord pony died suddenly having suffered a rupture to her main artery. She was only 5 years old and it was very unexpected. Her half sister Bonnie is till with us and we are working hard with her as she is missing her sister.

On a lighter note we did very well with the Herdwick sheep at Borrowby show, gaining 3 x 2nd places in the native sheep section.

The cottages have been very busy, and people seem to have enjoyed their stay with us, making lovely comments in the visitor books and making advanced bookings for next year.

Some of the chickens we purchased as ex-battery hens are now fully feathered and getting very cheeky, arriving at the house gates on a morning, looking hopeful for visitors toast and nibbles!!!

We have 3 super Siberian kittens that are now old enough to advertise, one in particular looks like a little bear, so we have called him Steiff!!!

well thats all the August news to date,

audrey and jim
